Description of the situation

Roma to a greater extent than the general Polish population, falls ill  a number of diseases. The available data 13 also shows that the average life expectancy of the Roma in Europe is shorter compared with the non-Roma. The survey conducted in 2012 by the Ministry of administration and digitization  about the community nurses who work with Roma families show that the diseases in the Roma community do not differ from generally occurring diseases, but their incidence is more frequent.

 

The most common diseases among the Roma community in Poland are:
- diseases of the respiratory system - asthma, inflammation, upper and lower respiratory tract,
- cardiovascular disease,
- hypertension, ischemic diseases,
- metabolic diseases,
- diabetic complications with different types of renal failure, vision problems, skin disorders,
- diseases of the urinary tract and genitals (bacterial infections),
- defects and underdevelopment in mental health,
- nervous system diseases: vision defects in children and adults, hearing loss, speech defects, epilepsy, hyperactivity, psychophysical diseases,
- diseases of the digestive system: diarrhea, vomiting, refluksy, ulcers.

 

The main factors contributing to poor health situation are:
- poverty and lack of resources for treatment,
- poor housing conditions and overcrowding in homes, conducive to the development of infection,
- low level of health awareness and problems with the education on healthy habits, often including the disability to interpret the advice of medical recommendations,
- bad eating habits, including unhealthy diet,
- low physical activity,
- lack of regularity, firmness, control, and taking drugs in the treatment,
- lack of monitoring pregnancy,

- early parenthood and social immaturity causes failing to meet its commitments,

- not vaccinating children,
- developing  infectious diseases more frequently,
- cigarette smoking, alcohol abuse and drug addiction,
- endogamous marriages cause birth defects,
- lack of trust in the health care system,

- difficulties arising from the benefit of the public healthcare system.

 

The same as in the society in general, a few of the most common addictions among the Roma are cigarette smoking, alcoholism and gambling (e.g. slot machine), as well as the emerging drug addiction occurring among the younger generation.
