Description of the situation

The main element contributing to the social structure of the Roma is the family. The Roma family, based on a monogamous marriage, is patriarchal and operates within the structure of ancestry. These features of Roma families contribute to the subordination of women to men, which also functions with a system of behaviour norms, injunctions and sanctions.
