Summary (goals and purposes of the project)
Roma people in Albania constitute a vulnerable group with significant socio-economic issues and concerns. Women represent a special category of this community and they are discriminated from both the majority society and Roma people themselves. The social, political and economic factors have not provided adequate opportunities for those women to be represented in the public activity, thus being out of the focus of general attention
The purpose of the project “Working with women building the future” was the empowerment of Roma women through capacity building, development of leadership skills, and development of critical thought and improvement of social skills to advocate for their own rights.

Results of the project
The mother’s centre “Swan” Tirane, has created independence of thought and action. Women have become well aware of the role they wish to assume in the society. They have developed their capacity to negotiate, to manage activities and to express opinions.
In Nishtulle, Durres, it is established the group of initiating women who decided to establish a mother’s center in their own community. They were inspired from the example of the mother’s center “Swan” in Tirana and they wish to play an active role within and out of their community.
Initial steps are taken for the creation of the network of Roma women at national level. Representative structures of Roma women from Tirane, Durres, Vlore (Llakatund& Akerni) Elbasan and Lezhe have decided to join this network.
Cooperation relationships are established between the mother’s center Swan,Tirane and the group of women from Nishtulle, Durres. The Roma community of Nishtulle, Durres suffers from the lack of running water for 10 years. Both groups of women are cooperating to organize a protest in front of the governmental institutions’ buildings in order to find a solution to this problem.
Development of discussions among women has encouraged them to talk about various barriers they face in their daily life such as lack of gender equality, restricted opportunities they have in the society as a consequence of the discrimination, powerlessness and economic problems or issues. Following these discussions, women stated that their leadership must be attached higher priority to the community life.
