The Roma community in the Republic of Slovenia does not have a status of a national minority but it is regarded as a specific ethnic community with specific ethnic characteristics (its own language, culture, other ethnic features).

 

The material and spiritual culture of the Roma is very pronounced. The most important and the most numerous in the Roma community are the traditions that bind to birth, marriage and death.

Description of the situation

The Roma culture is of Indian origin. Even today, the Roma people preserve numerous elements that reflect their cultural and ethnic origin and identity. Taking into account the historical facts of these people, one could say that the form of their culture has proven itself very functional. It endured the impacts of many incomparably more developed cultures.

Institutions

The Ministry of Culture supports the cultural activities of the Roma community in Slovenia through a special programme. The Roma projects have been a part of the special programme of the Ministry of Culture since 1993.
