Demographic data

In France it is not allowed to mention precise figures or numbers regarding minorities because of ethnical reasons. Only some estimations have been realized.

Roma people represent the largest minority in Europe, which became the core subject for all EU countries and EU policies in the past years. They are not a homogenous mass since they have a different economic and social status.

According to some estimations, nowadays, approximately 8 million Roma people live in all EU countries, of whom 20,000 live in France. According to a study made by DIHAL (Délégation Interministérielle à l’hébergement et à l’accès au logement), 7,000 Roma people live in the Ile-de-France area, near Paris.

Other four regions of France, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Pays-de-la-Loire and Rhône-Alpes, are also concerned about the high number of Roma people who live on their territory. For the DIHAL, the number of the Roma in these regions is estimated at 7,883 persons of whom 4,300 are children and babies.
